Questions To Determine Whether Invisalign Is Right For You

Questions To Determine Whether Invisalign Is Right For You

Straight teeth are not just for looks. A straighter smile means a boost of confidence and better oral health.

Crowded teeth are more susceptible to gum disease and decay. Yet genetics are the main cause of malalignment. You can’t choose your eye color nor how your teeth come in. Fortunately, there are dental solutions to the rescue!

Have you been considering orthodontics for you or your child? Just deciding to straighten teeth is a big step. The next step is a consultation with your Beaverton TenderCare dentist and deciding the best treatment.

Both Invisalign and braces straighten teeth over

time while nurturing your smile and oral health. However, there are many factors to consider such as length of treatment, appearance, cost, and

comfort.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a modern technology which uses a series of transparent aligners to shift teeth into place. These aligners are custom made for each patient to ensure a perfect fit. You change your set of aligners every two weeks to a new pair that will continue shifting teeth. You are expected to attend follow-up visits every 4-6 weeks to monitor your progress and receive the next sets.

Invisalign is currently approved for adults and teenagers (Invisalign Teen) with fully erupted permanent teeth.

Braces

For traditional braces, brackets are adhered to the front of your teeth and connected with a wire. That wire is tightened every 4-6 weeks. This gentle pressure from the wire will slowly shift your teeth into place over time.

Here are some questions to help determine whether Invisalign is right for you:

How important is daily comfort? Does minor discomfort bother you?

A mouthful of metal was almost like a rite of passage for many teens before Invisalign was created. Braces are notoriously uncomfortable as well as difficult to clean after eating. But with removable Invisalign aligners, there is no hassle with eating around brackets and wires.

Braces can be tender against the cheeks and wires may snap. Invisalign aligners are custom designed around the individual’s gum line so they won’t irritate the gums or cheeks.

Are you disciplined? Can you hold yourself accountable?

Invisalign requires a strong discipline to work. You must wear the aligners for no less than 22 hours per day, only taking them out to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss. It’s up to you to be diligent as it can be easy to forget to wear them or lose them.

Obviously you don’t have to hold yourself accountable with braces besides getting to your appointments.

How long do you want the straightening process to be? How does the next 1 to 3 years look for you?

The Invisalign process is over a shorter timeframe than metal braces.

  • ●  The total Invisalign treatment averages about 9-15 months.
  • ●  It depends upon the individual situation but the average time to wear traditional braces is

anywhere from 1 to 3 years.

Would you rather straighten your smile faster? Perhaps you’re going off to college in a year or you’re engaged to be married. Invisalign lets you live your life without interruptions so even during the straightening period, it isn’t noticeable that you’re undergoing treatment.

Are you self-conscious about straightening your teeth? Would you prefer to have a discreet treatment that doesn’t alter your appearance?

Invisalign is discreet and virtually invisible. Many people don’t notice someone is wearing the aligners until they are told so!
