10 Facts Your Dentist Wants You to Know About Checkups

Your Beaverton TenderCare dentist recommends that you visit every six months for your dental checkups. Not only is it a good way to nurture your smile, but regular checkups can detect and prevent other health problems. Before you come in for your checkup, here are some things we’d like you to know.

  1. Checkups include a screening for oral cancer. Only a dentist can perform a proper oral cancer exam, and catching the disease early is a key factor in fighting it. The process is short and painless and included in every checkup.
  2. We screen for periodontal disease. The disease can have a lasting effect on your overall health. It is linked to heart disease and stroke. By detecting it in its early stage, gingivitis, you can work with your dentist to keep the disease at bay. Remember brushing and flossing twice a day is the best prevention against gum disease.
  3. We ask you about bad breath for a reason. Bad breath could be a sign of a more serious dental problem. Around 85% of people with persistent bad breath have a dental condition to blame. Don’t be embarrassed, we are here to help.
  4. Dental problems do not go away without treatment. If you have been suffering with tooth pain or sensitivity, or notice that your gums are swollen or red, please do not hesitate to visit right away or to mention the problems to your dentist during your checkup.
  5. Checkups are easy when you have good habits. Brushing and flossing twice a day are the easiest and best way you can prevent tooth decay and gingivitis, but a good diet is also important. Make sure you are getting lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and avoiding sugar laden soft drinks and juices.
  6. Root canals are not as awful as you may think. Today, with the available technology, root canals are relatively painless. We’ll do all that we can to help keep you comfortable if you need a root canal or other dental procedure.
  7. We give you a new toothbrush because it is important to change them frequently. Manual toothbrushes need to be changed every 3 months, and if you have gum disease, you should get a new brush every 4-6 weeks. Make sure you also rinse your toothbrush with hot water every time you brush and dispose of it after you’ve been sick.
  8. We offer metal free fillings. Mercury free fillings are the only kind we offer for repairing your cavities. We believe in nurturing your smile safely and effectively.
  9. We love kids. We want your whole family to love coming in for a visit. We love kids and strive to do everything we can to make sure they have a fun, painless visit now and for years to come.
  10. We are here to answer questions. Please feel free to ask questions, express concerns or share stories about your pets. We want you to feel comfortable and informed during your visit.
