What exactly are wisdom teeth?

These teeth are the final set of molars. They usually begin to show at the back of the mouth in the late teens or early twenties.

Why do you need to have them removed?

There are a variety of risks associated when wisdom teeth start coming in. By getting your wisdom teeth extracted, you avoid the potential crowding of your teeth, tooth decay, and gum disease. Due to the position of the wisdom teeth in the mouth, they are harder to keep clean.

Wisdom teeth can also become impacted, meaning that they are blocked from fully emerging by another tooth. This can cause pain, damage to the existing teeth, and infections.

How do I know if my wisdom teeth are erupting?

You may experience swollen or bleeding gums, jaw pain, or be able to physically see the tooth as it comes in.

Does wisdom teeth extraction hurt?

No, you will receive anesthesia during the procedure. The pain you feel afterwards may depend on your body’s recovery process and the position of the teeth when they were extracted.

No matter how your wisdom teeth grow in, we are happy to help you in a comfortable manner. Feel free to read our patient reviews to learn why so many members of our community trust us with their dental care.

What can I expect after the extraction?

You may experience pain and swelling in your gums, jaw, or tooth socket. You may also bleed slowly for 24 hours afterward or have difficulty opening your jaw.

Is there anything I should avoid afterward?

  • Don’t eat any foods that require chewing or foods with small particles that could become lodged and infect your sockets.
  • Don’t brush or floss for the first 24 hours. However, after this period has passed, it’s important to brush and floss daily again.
  • Avoid any strenuous physical activity. Get lots of rest and allow yourself time to recover.
  • Don’t touch the extraction site with your tongue or hands.
  • Don’t drink from straws.
  • Don’t consume tobacco.

What symptoms should I contact Beaverton TenderCare Dental about after my extraction?

Please contact us if you develop any dry sockets. A dry socket occurs when you see bone instead of a dark blood clot.

In addition, tell us if, after the first 24 hours, you experience numbness in your mouth or lips, extreme nausea, or bleeding

What can help me recover and ease any pain?

  • You may use an ice pack as soon as you want to. After the first or second day, use a heat pack to relieve pain too.
  • Continually rinse and swish your mouth with warm salt water to kill any bacteria.
  • Do jaw exercises if it remains stiff.
